Enthronement of the Boy Bishop & Crowning of St Lucy

Traditional ceremony of installing a boy bishop at Evensong. This medieval custom embodies the words of the Magnificat, “he hath exalted the humble of meek.” A youth, who is a leader in the parish, is chosen to be the boy bishop each year. He “serves” until the Feast of the Holy Innocents on December 28.

The medieval tradition of crowning a “St Lucy” and procession through the neighborhood honors the virgin martyr and again calls to mind the light of Jesus Christ that has come into the world.
