Guilds & Societies

Guild: an association of people with similar interests or pursuits
Society: a voluntary association of individuals for common ends
- Merriam-Webster

Guilds and Societies are two words that essentially describe the same thing: a voluntary organization of individuals bound together by a common work or devotion. Long before churches had ‘small groups,’ ‘fellowship groups’, or ‘dinner clubs,’ guilds and societies served as the parochial backbone. Being a member of the parish brings one in communion with the apostolic church. Expectations of parish membership are faithful attendance at the Holy Eucharist (Sundays and Holy Days) and supporting the work of the Church by financial stewardship and by participating in the life of the parish. To fulfil these expectations, each Christian benefits through participation in smaller communities – guilds and societies. These communities provide mutual support and pastoral care, encourage devotion and faithful participation in the mass, and provide opportunities and means for works of mercy and support. The larger a parish becomes, the more important these communities are.

Each guild/society is to have three components: 1) a devotional focus, 2) a work of mercy and/or support, and 3) intentional community. The community will not ultimately thrive unless all three components are given equal attention.

Each guild/society will have an appointed leader to serve a term of one year (may be reappointed).

Each guild/society will be prayed for on a rota at the Daily Office.

Each guild/society will receive recognition on a Sunday or Holy Day each year.

Each guild/society will receive support from Rector, Vestry, and Staff.
