Music Notes for March 1

This week’s anthem is “Bow down thine ear” by Charles Wood (1866-1926), Irish composer and teacher of Ralph Vaughan Williams and Herbert Howells. The anthem’s text is the Coverdale translation of Psalm 86:1-4: “Bow down thine ear, O Lord, and hear me: for I am poor, and in misery. Preserve thou my soul, for I am holy: my God, save thy servant that putteth his trust in thee. Be merciful unto me, O Lord: for I will call daily upon thee. Comfort the soul of thy servant: for unto thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul.” The choir will also sing a well-known setting of Psalm 121 by Henry Walford Davies, an English composer, organist, and educator who held the title Master of the King's Music from 1934-1941.
