Music for Nov 23

For Christ the King Sunday, we welcome violinist Charley Shafer, who will offer two contrasting works: the Allegro risoluto from Antonín Dvořák’s Sonatina in G Major, Op. 100—a piece shaped by the composer’s time in America—and the lyrical Andante from J.S. Bach’s Violin Sonata in B Minor, BWV 1014, notable for its expressive dialogue between violin and continuo. The choir will also present Hugo Distler’s vibrant anthem “Praise to the Lord, the Almighty,” drawn from his Geistliche Chormusik (1934), in which Distler reimagines historic chorale writing with his characteristically bright, rhythmic style.
