Music for January 11
Our anthem for the First Sunday after the Epiphany is “How brightly shines the morning star” by Dirk Janszoon Sweelinck (1562–1621), a choral setting of the well-known Epiphany chorale Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern. Sweelinck, the leading keyboard composer of the Dutch Golden Age, was also highly influential as a teacher and choral composer. The two organ voluntaries are also settings of Wie schön leuchtet by J.C. Bach and Johann Pachelbel.
